Game Caption Privacy Policy

This policy explains how Game Caption handles camera access, OCR, translation processing, DeepL Quality Mode, subscriptions and user data.

Effective date: June 21, 2026

1. Introduction

Game Caption is an iOS app that helps users read and translate game subtitles and on-screen text visible on a TV or monitor using the iPhone or iPad camera.

This Privacy Policy explains what data Game Caption uses, how camera access works, how OCR and translation processing work, how DeepL Quality Mode works, and how subscriptions and payments are managed.

Game Caption is designed to be privacy-friendly. The app does not contain ads, does not require user accounts, and does not send camera images to developer-owned servers.

2. Data We Use

Game Caption uses as little data as possible for the app to function.

The app may use the following data:

  • Camera access: Used to detect game subtitles and on-screen text on a TV or monitor when the user starts translation.
  • Text recognized by OCR: On-screen subtitles or text may be processed as text to generate translations.
  • DeepL API key: If the user wants to use DeepL Quality Mode, the user may enter their own DeepL API key.
  • Premium subscription status: Apple StoreKit / App Store subscription status may be used to check whether Premium features are active.
  • Support emails: If the user contacts us, we may process the email address and message content in order to respond.

Game Caption does not collect:

  • Location data
  • Microphone data
  • Contacts or address book data
  • Photo library data
  • Advertising identifiers
  • User account information
  • Payment card or banking information stored by the developer

3. Camera Use

Game Caption requests camera permission in order to read subtitles and on-screen text from the game screen.

Camera permission is requested only when the user starts an action such as “Start Translation.” The camera cannot be used unless the user grants permission.

  • Camera images are not recorded.
  • Camera images are not saved to the photo library.
  • Camera video or camera frames are not sent to developer-owned servers.
  • Camera images are not used for advertising, tracking, or analytics.
  • Camera images are not used to identify the user.
  • The app does not use the microphone.

The camera is used only to detect on-screen text and provide the translation experience.

4. OCR and Translation Processing

Game Caption uses OCR technology to recognize game subtitles and on-screen text visible on a TV or monitor.

OCR processing is performed using native iOS technologies such as Apple Vision. The purpose of this processing is to convert visible text in the camera view into text.

Text recognized by OCR may be processed to generate translations. This text is not a camera image; it is only the text content recognized from the screen.

Standard translation is free and unlimited. A user account is not required for standard translation.

5. DeepL Quality Mode and User API Key

Game Caption may offer advanced features such as DeepL Quality Mode for Premium users.

DeepL Quality Mode works only when the user enters their own DeepL API key into the app.

  • Game Caption does not operate a developer-owned DeepL proxy server.
  • The app developer does not see users’ DeepL API keys.
  • The app developer does not store users’ DeepL API keys on developer-owned servers.
  • The app developer does not send users’ DeepL API keys to developer-owned servers.
  • The DeepL API key entered by the user is stored in the device’s secure Keychain.
  • The user can delete the DeepL API key or remove it by saving an empty value.

When DeepL Quality Mode is enabled, OCR-recognized text, source/target language information, and translation context required for translation may be sent directly to the DeepL API. This is done only to generate the translation result.

Use of DeepL is subject to DeepL’s own privacy policy and terms of use. Users who do not want to use DeepL Quality Mode can continue without entering a DeepL API key.

6. Subscriptions and Payments

Standard translation in Game Caption is free and unlimited.

A Premium subscription may unlock advanced features such as DeepL Quality Mode. Monthly and yearly subscriptions are managed through the Apple App Store.

  • Payments are handled by Apple StoreKit / App Store.
  • The developer does not see credit card, debit card, or payment information.
  • The developer does not store payment information.
  • Premium subscription status is verified through Apple StoreKit.
  • The app includes a “Restore Purchases” feature.
  • A 7-day free trial may be offered through App Store Connect.
  • Subscription cancellation, renewal, and management are handled through the user’s Apple account.

Users can manage subscriptions from the Apple ID subscription settings on their iPhone or iPad.

7. Data Sharing

Game Caption does not share user data with third-party advertising networks.

Camera images are not sent to developer-owned servers. Camera video or camera frames are not stored by the developer.

When DeepL Quality Mode is used, OCR-recognized text and the translation information required to generate a translation may be sent directly to the DeepL API. This happens only when the user enters their own DeepL API key and uses DeepL Quality Mode.

Payment and subscription processes are managed by the Apple App Store.

8. Advertising and Tracking

Game Caption does not contain ads.

  • AdMob is not used.
  • Third-party advertising networks are not used.
  • User tracking systems are not used.
  • Data is not collected for advertising.
  • Data is not used for ad targeting.
  • Firebase Crashlytics is not used.
  • User behavior is not tracked for advertising or marketing purposes.

Game Caption does not collect data to track users across apps or websites.

9. Data Retention and Deletion

Game Caption is designed to store as little data as possible.

  • Camera images are not permanently stored.
  • Camera images are not saved to the photo library.
  • Camera images are not sent to developer-owned servers.
  • The user’s DeepL API key is stored in the device’s secure Keychain.
  • The user can delete the DeepL API key in the app or remove it by saving an empty value.
  • Support emails may be retained for a reasonable period in order to respond to user requests.

Users may contact us at support@gamecaptionapp.com to request information or deletion related to support emails or information they have shared with us.

10. Children’s Privacy

Game Caption does not include a special data collection system directed at children.

The app does not create user accounts, does not show ads, does not collect location data, does not use the microphone, and does not send contacts, photo library data, or camera images to developer-owned servers.

Children’s privacy is important to us. If a parent or guardian believes that information about a child has been shared with us, they can contact us at support@gamecaptionapp.com.

11. Third-Party Services

Game Caption may be associated with the following third-party services:

  • Apple StoreKit / App Store: Used for subscriptions, payments, free trials, purchase verification, and Restore Purchases.
  • DeepL API: Used only when the user enters their own DeepL API key and uses DeepL Quality Mode.

Use of DeepL is subject to DeepL’s own privacy policy and terms of use. Payments and subscriptions made through Apple are subject to Apple’s terms.

12. Security

Game Caption uses device-level and platform-provided security technologies to protect user privacy.

  • The DeepL API key is stored in the device’s secure Keychain.
  • The developer does not store users’ DeepL API keys on developer-owned servers.
  • Camera images are not sent to developer-owned servers.
  • Payment information is not processed by the developer; it is handled by the Apple App Store.

No digital system is completely risk-free, but Game Caption focuses on avoiding unnecessary data collection and protecting user privacy.

13. Changes

This Privacy Policy may be updated from time to time. If important changes are made, the effective date on this page will be updated.

Continuing to use the app may indicate acceptance of the updated Privacy Policy.
